In November, Washington state voters will decide on Initiative 2066, a proposal impacting the use of natural gas. Supporters, including industry groups, claim it will protect personal energy choices, while opponents argue it will hinder efforts to reduce fossil fuel reliance and combat climate change. If passed, the initiative would reverse parts of recent state laws encouraging a shift to electric alternatives in new construction, including heat pumps over gas appliances, and limit local jurisdictions from discouraging natural gas.
The initiative gained ballot access with support from Let’s Go Washington, a coalition led by multimillionaire Brian Heywood. Proponents argue that limiting natural gas could raise construction costs, harm businesses like restaurants, and impose financial burdens on consumers. Opponents, including environmental groups, counter that transitioning from natural gas is essential for achieving clean energy targets and protecting low-income families who might lose access to incentives for electrification.
